Because it DOES seem like an art shift? Frankly, the image has more in common with some of the episodes of CLANNAD After Story (the one with Mei comes to mind, as well as all the episodes we've had with Ushio), that featured either a softer and rounded look, or was helmed by the Art Director of Lucky Star (which, remember, had rounded character designs). Also, it reminds me of the promo images of K-ON that's been released recently.

Oh and I forgot to say, I watched the episode and it was Melancholy I, with the fixes from the DVD version (i.e. no more helicopter legs in the OP among other minor things such as the teacher's name on the blackboard during the introductions). The copyrights still say 2006.

It's nice to have the fixed version in HD now though.

And there was no preview. That surprised me a little.

I think it would be pretty impossible for a preview.
Even though Melancholy II comes after Melancholy I, the preview would still say, "for episode 3". It didn't really shock me or anything.

Does anyone know where to get soft-subs for the DVD version (or maybe even the new TV version)?

I doubt anyone would release a subbed version of the rerun, but since it has the same timing as the DVD maybe subs can be found for it?

They worked fine for Episode 2 as well (which as expected was SHnY II).

But I admit the clues are really ambiguous,and it's also totally possible that he himself doesn't know. It probably won't happen, but I'm kind of hoping that with all the stress flying about, something will happen to shove him out of that "mask" rut and we'll get more clues as to who he is and/or how he feels about the others.
